# Markdown Table Generator > Free in-browser tool that builds a GitHub Flavored Markdown table from a grid, from pasted CSV, TSV, JSON, or from an existing Markdown table, with per-column alignment and an HTML table export. Independent tool, not affiliated with GitHub. Updated 2026-10-29. Full page: https://lab.awaara.cn/markdown-table-generator/ ## What it does - Grid editor: type in cells, add or remove rows and columns (up to 50 data rows and 12 columns), set left, center, or right alignment per column. The first row is the header. - Output: padded GitHub Flavored Markdown by default (padding can be switched off), a rendered preview, an HTML table version, copy buttons, and a download as table.md. - Import: paste CSV, TSV, JSON (array of arrays or array of objects), or an existing Markdown table. The grid is replaced with the pasted data, the old separator row is dropped, short rows are padded with empty cells, and pipes inside cells are escaped. - Everything runs locally in the browser. Nothing is sent to a server. ## What a Markdown table is - A GitHub Flavored Markdown table has a header row, a separator row, and one row per record, with cells split by pipe characters. The separator row marks the block as a table and sets alignment: a colon on the left means left aligned, colons on both sides mean centered, and a colon on the right means right aligned. - A pipe inside a cell must be escaped as backslash plus pipe, or the cell splits in two. Padding with spaces is optional and ignored by renderers, but it makes the source text easier to edit by hand. - GitHub Flavored Markdown has no colspan, rowspan, or nested tables, and a cell cannot hold a real line break. Some renderers also need a blank line before the table. - GitHub and GitLab render pipe tables in READMEs, issues, pull requests, and wikis. Notion converts a pasted Markdown table into its own table block and may drop alignment or reflow wide tables. ## Sources - GitHub Flavored Markdown spec, section 4.10 Tables: https://github.github.com/gfm/#tables-extension- - GitHub Docs, Organizing information with tables: https://docs.github.com/en/get-started/writing-on-github/working-with-advanced-formatting/organizing-information-with-tables
